Why is SAR more expensive than optical images?

While SAR imagery may appear more basic than optical imagery, in that it is grayscale rather than color, it is much more complex and expensive to collect. SAR systems require specialized equipment, such as radar transmitters and receivers, which are not only expensive, but have limited availability as there are fewer SAR satellites in orbit. Additionally, SAR data processing requires specialized software and computing resources, which is expensive and complex.
